Inspiring Cultural And Environment Wellness
Nestled beneath the Ko'olau mountains and watched over by the Olomana ridges is a beautiful large body of freshwater known as Kawainui, the heartbeat of Kailua ahupua'a. Surrounding this majestic body of water are many 'ili or small land sections that border this large body of water, and one of these 'ili is Palalupe.
Named after the great chief Kūaliʻi who was born in Kailua during the 1500s, our organization Ke Kahua O Kūaliʻi stewards 14-acres of land that were documented as Palalupe and Pohakea during the 19th century as part of the great body of water that remains known as Kawainui. Ke Kahua O Kūaliʻi has been reviving, restoring, and cultivating Palalupe and Pohakea to inspire our community to care for Kawainui, a massive basin of water at the heart of Kailua. As an organization founded by Kanaka ʻŌiwi, we know our culture is inseparable from our land and we bring this value into our organization as a foundation of our work. Having a healthy environment with fresh water directly correlates to a thriving community. Our organization strives to build positive relationships between our Native Hawaiian culture, Kawainui, and with each other. Together we learn and grow for a healthier tomorrow.
